Focusing on natural treatments to enhance addiction recovery
Several years ago I was employed with a clinic in the role of both physician and counselor. In this position I undertook the role of designing an educational curriculum that could be taught to addiction patients as part of group therapy. This first half of the group was spent on learning new material and the second half used to discuss how to apply this information, via case discussion, in a group setting. The response was overwhelming. The patients thoroughly enjoyed the different topics and how it could and eventually did, impact their lives. My hope is that now this curriculum will reach many more people, specifically those who are currently in treatment and are motivated to make the necessary life changes that we know must accompany medical management.
I completed my undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh and soon after relocated to Arizona. I knew I wanted to go back to school but really didn't know what for. I chose Sport Administration because I was a former collegiate student athlete and figured I could work in the athletetic department.
After completing my internship I relocated back to Arizona and decided to start doing personal training while looking for work. I also started working for a behavioral health agency as a clinician; my role was to assess clients in hospitals and determine the level of care they needed. I also admitted and discharged clients from programs and developed treatment plans that would enable them to work on self-improvement. A psychiatrist friend of mine suggested I consider medicine. To be honest, I never even thought about it up to that point. But, considering I was enjoying my work in behavioral health, and am genuinely interested in people, I thought maybe I should give this a chance.
After enrolling in the local college to complete my prerequisites, I found I did pretty well and my appreciation for medicine started to grow. I enrolled in the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine to understand how to combine the best of both conventional and alternative treatments.
During medical school I was able to see many patients who were suffering from mental health and addiction problems. I am thankful to this day for those rotations, they helped shape my desire to help those who I believe need integrative medicine the most.
Years have passed and I am now seeing addiction patients at Ideal Option Medical Clinic. I am beyond grateful for this opportunity and work with an outstanding group of people dedicated to getting people chemically free. It is my sincere hope to teach my patients, however, in reality, I learn more from them than they could ever learn from me. In the near future I will also be consulting on alternative treatments for mental health patients at Sunstone Natural Health.
