Is this your addiction treatment experience?
My medical provider checks my screens, makes sure I'm feeling well, maybe asks a few questions, and then refills my prescription. Does this sound like your visit? If so, don't feel alone. In a time of pressured visits, managed care, and in the wake of the opioid epidemic, your doctor most likely does not have the time or the resources to review important topics with you. This is not to imply that they don't want to, the time just isn't there.
ARe you part of the 89% that are not seeking treatment?
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s (SAMHSA’s) National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 23.5 million people (ages 12 and over) needed treatment for a drug or alcohol abuse problem in 2009. Only 11.2% of these people sought treatment at a professional facility. Although humbling, asking for help is very noble, and we sincerely encourage you to take the first step in admitting there is a problem and working with an addiction medicine professional.
According to the CDC Vitalsigns, in 2010 there was an abundance of painkillers prescribed in the U.S. that it could medicate every adult for 24 hours per day for one full month. Over 20 million Americans 12 or older had a substance use disorder in 2015. Two million of the 20 plus million had a substance use disorder involving prescription pain relievers. 591,000 had a substance use disorder involving heroin. It is no surprise the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. is drug overdose with 52,404 in 2015. That is an average of 144 people dying each day from overdose. Opioid addiction is driving this epidemic with 20,101 overdose deaths related to prescription pain relievers, or 55 people per day. 12,990 overdose deaths have been related to heroin which equals approximately 36 individual deaths each day. These statistics are alarming, if you or a loved one is suffering from addiction don't delay on seeking professional help.
